Build a Breakpoint Evidence Pack for Responsive Website Signoff

Capture responsive decisions with representative widths, content stress cases, interaction states, and reproducible evidence.

Three attractive screenshots do not demonstrate responsive behavior between them. A breakpoint evidence pack shows why layout changes occur and how real content behaves around each transition.

Record rules rather than device labels

For each component or template, document the layout constraint that triggers change: insufficient line length, control collision, unreadable density, or loss of usable target space. Keep the actual CSS boundary and the tested widths beside the explanation.

Capture boundary cases

  • Just below, at, and just above each breakpoint.
  • Short and long approved content.
  • Navigation open and closed.
  • Error, empty, loading, and populated states.
  • Zoomed text and keyboard focus where relevant.
  • Portrait and landscape only when they expose distinct behavior.
  • Make evidence reproducible

Name the route, build SHA, viewport, browser, zoom, data fixture, and capture date. Store files in the client workspace with a stable naming pattern. Avoid claiming broad device coverage from an emulator screenshot.

    Review the spaces between

Drag or script through intermediate widths to find sudden overflow, stranded elements, and excessive whitespace. Confirm horizontal scrolling occurs only where intentionally designed, such as a contained data region.

    Frequently asked questions

Are common phone and desktop widths sufficient?

No. Test around the design's actual transition points and with content extremes.

Must every component share the same breakpoints?

No. Component behavior can respond to its own available space when the implementation supports it.
