The Favicon Handoff That Survives Every Browser Tab

Give an outsourced web team the source, sizes, contrast rules, and acceptance checks needed for a durable favicon set.

A favicon is tiny, but its handoff crosses design files, browser metadata, caches, bookmarks, and installed shortcuts. Sending one small PNG leaves the production team guessing which source is authoritative.

Package the identity, not one export

Provide the approved vector source, a simple mark that remains legible at 16 pixels, background rules, and named light or dark variants. State whether the mark may be cropped or padded. Keep the browser icon distinct from an app icon if their shapes or safe areas differ.

Map every file to a use

List the filename, pixel dimensions, format, intended metadata field, and owner. Include the fallback favicon and any approved touch icon. The developer should not invent colors or redraw the logo to satisfy a generator.

Test the published result

Open a fresh profile, request each asset directly, and inspect a tab, bookmark, and supported mobile shortcut. Check light and dark browser chrome. Record cache behavior separately from a missing file so an old local icon does not hide a correct release.
