“Make it fast” is not an acceptance criterion. A performance budget gives the design and development partner constraints they can check while choices are still reversible.

Set budgets by page type

A campaign landing page, article, account screen, and media gallery do not carry the same assets or interactions. For each template, document agreed limits for transferred bytes, image weight, font files, third-party scripts, and any client-selected lab or field metrics.

Check at decision points

  • Review image formats and crop dimensions before export.
  • Confirm font families, weights, and fallback behavior.
  • Inventory scripts before adding tags or embeds.
  • Test the representative page on narrow and wide viewports.
  • Record the build, device profile, connection profile, and tool version.
  • Handle exceptions as tradeoffs

When a page exceeds its budget, identify the specific asset or behavior and the benefit it is meant to provide. Offer a lighter alternative. The business owner should accept the tradeoff explicitly rather than inheriting it at launch.

Compare lab and field evidence carefully

Lab tests are repeatable snapshots; field data reflects eligible real visits over time. Do not promise that one good test predicts every user experience. Keep the measurement method beside the result.
