Create a Favicon and App Icon Handoff for Website Design
Document approved icon sources, sizes, formats, browser references, ownership, and visual QA for launch.

**Published: September 2, 2026**
Small site icons appear in browser tabs, bookmarks, shortcuts, and installed experiences. A blurred or outdated mark often comes from an incomplete asset handoff rather than a design problem in the page itself.
Start with an approved source
Record the brand owner, editable source location, approved symbol, safe area, background treatment, and restrictions on cropping or recoloring. Derive required outputs from that source and keep the relationship between each file and its intended context clear.
Inventory implementation targets
Test real surfaces
Check supported browsers, pinned or saved shortcuts where in scope, high-density displays, and both light and dark browser chrome. Confirm missing assets return a real error rather than an unrelated image. Review the smallest rendition for recognizability.
Preserve ownership
Store source artwork and export instructions in a client-controlled location. Record trademark approval and asset provenance. The outsourced team can prepare variants, but should not invent a new logo or download an unapproved substitute.

Frequently asked questions
Is one large PNG enough?
Not always. The required set depends on browser support, manifest scope, and the visual behavior of the mark.
Who approves icon changes?
The client brand owner should approve the source and significant visual variations.
