Research question

What evidence shows that a modal dialog is named, operable, bounded, dismissible, and able to return a keyboard user to a sensible location?

Methodology and scope

We reviewed the WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices dialog pattern, the ARIA specification, WCAG 2.2, and the HTML dialog element. Scope includes modal dialogs on public and authenticated websites. Nonmodal windows and native operating-system prompts are excluded.

Evidence synthesis

The APG describes initial focus, contained Tab movement, Escape behavior, and focus restoration. ARIA defines dialog roles and modal state. HTML provides native dialog behavior, including modal presentation through `showModal()`. WCAG requirements still apply to name, role, value, focus order, visible focus, and keyboard operation regardless of implementation choice.

Practical interpretation

Inference: reviewers should record the trigger, accessible name, initial focused element, Tab and Shift+Tab boundaries, Escape outcome, background availability, and returned focus. Run the sequence for success, validation failure, cancellation, and a trigger removed while the dialog is open. DOM properties and a short keyboard recording complement each other.

Inference boundaries and limitations

Following the APG pattern does not by itself establish WCAG conformance or good product judgment. Initial focus depends on content and task risk. Browser and assistive-technology combinations may expose native and scripted dialogs differently. This is not a complete accessibility audit.
