This WebsiteDesignOutsource.com study reviews how data relationships can survive semantic and responsive implementation. Sources were observed September 11, 2026.

Methodology

We compared HTML table semantics, WCAG 2.2 requirements and techniques, WAI table tutorials, ARIA practices for sortable tables, and government design-system guidance. We coded guidance for naming, headers, cells, controls, overflow, and alternate presentations.

Scope, population, and observation window

The population includes people reading web data with screen readers, keyboards, zoom, magnification, touch, and conventional pointers. Scope covers static and sortable data tables rendered in browsers. Layout tables, spreadsheets, and interactive data-grid applications are excluded. The documentary observation window ended September 11, 2026.

Evidence synthesis

Native table markup conveys row and column relationships when captions and header cells are used correctly. Complex spans require more deliberate associations. Responsive delivery can use horizontal overflow when it preserves relationships, but controls, labels, and focus must remain visible and operable. Sorting needs an exposed control and current state.

Inference and causal boundaries

Inference: acceptance should include a semantic inspection, cell navigation, sorting, 200 percent zoom, a narrow viewport, long values, and print preview. Correct table structure supports interpretation but does not prove that the selected data, grouping, or visualization answers a user's question. Comparative usability claims need task research.

Limitations

This review did not test very large virtualized grids, statistical comprehension, bidirectional languages, exported files, or specific assistive-technology combinations. Horizontal scrolling may be acceptable in one context and burdensome in another.
