What Counts as Evidence for a Production Favicon Set?
A source-led study of favicon formats, discovery, installed icons, caching, and review limits.

**Published: September 9, 2026**
Small browser icons are delivered through several HTML and manifest mechanisms. This WebsiteDesignOutsource.com study asks what an outsourced team can verify without claiming identical presentation across browsers. Sources were reviewed September 9, 2026.
Research question
Which source files, metadata, response checks, and visual samples support a defensible favicon acceptance record?
Methodology and scope
We compared WHATWG link-type requirements, W3C manifest material, MDN references, browser guidance, and image-format documentation. Scope includes public websites and installable web experiences. Native application packaging and individual browser branding choices are excluded.
Evidence synthesis
HTML icon links can provide several candidates with types and sizes, while user agents select an appropriate resource. A web app manifest introduces additional icon purposes and size declarations. This means one screenshot cannot prove the full set. Direct asset responses, parsed metadata, dimensions, transparency, and representative browser views answer different parts of the question.
The favicon also sits behind caches. A stale local icon can disagree with the current response even when production is correct. A review should identify the requested URL and response separately from a browser's displayed result.
Practical interpretation
Inference: a compact evidence pack should include the approved master, an asset matrix, direct HTTP results, document and manifest references, and fresh-profile views at representative small sizes. Review contrast against common light and dark chrome, but do not infer universal appearance from two browsers.
Inference limits and limitations
Browser selection, masking, scaling, caching, and installed shortcut behavior vary by product and operating system. Standards describe inputs more reliably than final chrome. This is not trademark guidance, a complete progressive web app audit, or proof of every device.
